The Best Books For Toddlers

My little man is going to be three (gasp) next month, and throughout his short life I have worked hard to cultivate a love of reading. This means I have consistently read to him before naps and bedtime for 3 years. I am so happy to report that he loves it! I even find him “reading” books on his own every morning while he waits for me to come and get him up in the morning.

During this stage of life, I am reading 3 books before nap and 2 or 3 before bedtime. That is a lot of books! If you are a parent you know that reading children’s books is a lot less fun for you than for your child. Here are a few that I have enjoyed reading to my son, and that he loves to listen to!

We have loved The Little Blue Truck since Randsom was 1, and I haven’t gotten tired of reading it yet! The story teaches children the importance of being a good friend and treating everyone with kindness. The illustrations are colorful and cute, and my son loves making the animal sounds with me.

(Bonus) The Author also has a book called Little Blur Truck in the City, which is equally wonderful!

The Big Red Barn
Apparently this is a classic bedtime story that I somehow missed out on as a child. I love that The Big Red Barn book has great illustrations and the flow of the story just seems to have a calming effect which is perfect for before bedtime. I can’t really explain it, but I feel so relaxed reading this book.

King Jack And The Dragon
King Jack and the Dragon took a little time to grow on me, but it is now a favorite and my son asks for this one constantly. I love how the story reinforces the use of imagination, and teaches kids that it’s OK to be afraid. The art is also unique compared to other children’s books, which is fun.

I seriously love ALL the books that I have read by this author. They rhyme and make reading aloud so easy and fun. The Bear Snores On took a while for my son to enjoy because it is a longer story (for a toddler anyway) but he loves them now. Our collection of “bear” books has grown and we read one almost every day!

Little Owls Night
We pick up this book over Christmas, I was desperate for way to entertain my son the plane ride and thought a new book would occupy him. I was wrong of course, never expect a toddler to want to read a book on a plane. Ever. But once the plane ride was over and we where home, we started reading and enjoying this book. It’s about a little owl and his night-time adventure. It is another book that is easy for mom to read aloud and my son seems to love the unique animals in the story.

Bonus Favorite: Blah Blah Black Sheep
I am calling this a bonus book because my son is obsessed with Blah Blah Black Sheep, but it’s not my favorite to read. I swear I read this book everyday for a year when we first got it. It’s a very short story about a sheep not fitting in and teaching children that being unique is a good thing. Overall a good message and story, but not as fun for mama!

I hope you guys enjoyed my book list for toddlers, and found something you’ve never heard of! What are some of your favorite books to read to your kiddos? We are ALWAYS on the hunt for new books in this house.
