5 Must Have Items For When Your Kid Gets Sick

Does anyone else go in to straight up panic mode at the sound of your child coughing or sneezing?

I know I do.

I’m constantly afraid someone is going to get sick, and eventually they do. This week, my son and my husband both caught a nasty cold. When I have sickies in my house, these are the items I always reach for! Now it’s time to hunker down and ride out the storm. Hopefully Emersyn and I can avoid catching all these germs.

This might seem obvious, but I can’t be the only one who is always out of coffee when I need it most. And let’s be real, the last thing you want to do is run to the store when you have sick little ones. I try to always keep a few K-cups hidden in our medicine cabinet, that way if I’m up all night with a sick kid (or husband) I will have “fuel” in the morning to get me through the day. These are my current favorite!

Hand sanitizing Spray

Picking up used tissues, getting sneezed on, and just generally touching yucky things is the norm when kids are sick. Obviously I don’t always have time to run to the sink and wash my hands, and that’s why I love hand sanitizer. I recently ordered the Honest Company Sanitizer Spray and I am addicted! It smells great and it’s so easy to keep close and spray when I need it. It’s also great to douse the kids in, because it doesn’t have any yucky chemicals and won’t drip everywhere before they rub it in. Go get some- you seriously need it.

Forhead Digital Thermometer

My amazing mother in-law gifted us one of these bad boys when my son was born. I thought it was silly, and that a regular one would get the job done. I was wrong. It is so much easier to quickly run this across a sick/squirmy toddlers forehead, than it is to tackle them and try to get a reading on a regular thermometer.

The concept is gross. You’re basically sucking the snot out of your kids nose. Thankfully, the snot never actually gets anywhere near your mouth. This is the best thing for when your kids, especially babies, are congested. Also, have you tried to explain to a two-year old how to blow their nose? It’s impossible. I can not recommend this enough!

A Humidifier

I didn’t purchase a humidifier until this year. I grew up having my mom put one in my room whenever I was sick, but it never dawned on me to do the same for my kids. A humidifier helps put moisture back into the air, which in turn helps loosen congestion and keep your skin/nose/throat from getting too dry when you are sick. I have a small one that I can move easily from room to room. Bonus, you van throw in a couple drops of essential oils, and it’s basically a spa!

Bonus Items

I keep a box somewhere in the house (out of reach of little ones!) with Tylenol, tissues, band aids, Benadryl, my NoseFrida, digital thermometer, Vic’s vapor rub, and rags (for the yucky things you get to clean up). Or just store it all in a designated throw up bucket. Kill two birds with one… bucket.

I dread being sick and having sick kids, but at least I know I’m prepared for when it inevitably happens! What do you keep on hand for when your family is sick?
